MANILA — Local TV viewers can look forward to a variety of genres from ABS-CBN’s upcoming series, from romantic-comedy, drama, fantasy to action.
After the recent primetime debut of “Muling Buksan ang Puso,” several more Kapamilya series are now in different stages of development, among them the recently announced launching series of young actress Julia Barretto.
Here are seven ABS-CBN projects known to be in the works, and what we know about them so far:
Starring: Julia Barretto, Kiko Estrada, Diego Loyzaga
What we know: In place of “Cofradia,” which drew controversy even before it went into production, Barretto will topbill a series for the first time via “Mira Bella.” The “fantaserye” will center on the title character as she overcomes a certain curse.
Directed by Erick Salud (“Aryana,” “May Isang Pangarap”) and Jerome Pobocan (“Mara Clara,” “May Bukas Pa”), the series also stars Gloria Diaz, Mylene Dizon, Pokwang and John Lapus. Its target airing date has yet to be announced.
GOT TO BELIEVE
Starring: Kathryn Bernardo, Daniel Padilla
What we know: Announced in early May, the Cathy Garcia-Molina-helmed project features the second major team-up Bernardo and Padilla on the small screen after the series “Princess and I.”
Told through a genre mastered by its director — Molina is behind the box-office hits “My Amnesia Girl” and “It Takes A Man and A Woman” — “Got To Believe” tells the story of a simple girl with big dreams and a rich boy from a broken family.
As children, Chichay (Bernardo) and Joaquin (Padilla) form an unlikely friendship when he stumbles upon a circus where the high-spirited girl works along with her parents. Separated by an accident, the two, as teenagers, literally bump into each other at the same place they first met.
Also starring Manilyn Reynes, Benjie Paras, Carmina Villaroel and Ian Veneracion, “Got To Believe” was announced as a new addition to ABS-CBN’s Primetime Bida line-up. It is expected to premiere in the coming months.
BUKAS NA LANG KITA MAMAHALIN
Starring: Gerald Anderson, Cristine Reyes, Dawn Zulueta
What we know: Plagued with controversy even before it hits the small screen, the project was initially announced as the drama series comeback of Maricel Soriano. Following an incident on set involving the veteran actress and Anderson, Soriano was eventually replaced by Zulueta to take on the role of the young actor’s mother.
In development as early as October last year, “Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin,” according to Anderson and Reyes, will see the actress’ character pursue her dream of becoming a lawyer, in the hope of freeing from jail the man she loves.
As of January this year, among the other known cast members of the soap are Diana Zubiri, Dina Bonnevie, Tonton Gutierrez and Rayver Cruz. Although “Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin” isn’t set to air soon, according to Anderson early this month, the filming for the series is ongoing.
Starring: Jessy Mendiola, Jake Cuenca, Jason Abalos
What we know: The ABS-CBN remake of the hit “telenovela” starring Mexican superstar Thalia, like the original, will center on the title character as a street urchin whose life takes a turn when she agrees to marry a rich man who is terminally ill.
Mendiola, who was launched as a series lead star in 2010′s “Sabel,” considers the Maria Mercedes role a “dream come true.” The 20-year-old actress was even up for the challenge to sing the local remake’s theme song, as did Thalia for the original.
Directed by Rechie del Carmen (“Paraiso,” “Mundo Man Ay Magunaw”), the series also features as cast members Vina Morales, Dominic Ochoa, Nadia Montenegro and Vivian Velez.
Starring: Andi Eigenmann, Matteo Guidicelli
What we know: After her breakthrough role in the hit series “Agua Bendita,” Eigenmann will be playing another classic Pinoy komiks character — this time as Galema. The Jim Fernandez-created character is the daughter of Zuma, who is known for having a two-headed snake on his shoulders.
Although the series has yet to be officially announced, the 23-year-old actress’ mother, Jaclyn Jose, said in March “Galema” will be directed by Wenn Deramas (“Marina,” “Dyosa”). On Instagram, Eigenmann has likewise shared details about the show, saying she will once again co-star with Guidicelli, her “Agua Bendita” leading man.
UNTITLED ANGEL-MAJA SERIES
Starring: Angel Locsin, Maja Salvador, Jericho Rosales
What we know: Three years since her last TV series, Locsin in late June announced that she is set to star in a new soap, this time co-starring Salvador and Rosales.
Although no official announcement has been made on the new project, its stars have taken to social networking sites to express their excitement about the show. Maria Isabel Lopez, in a series of posts on Instagram, shared that the cast also includes Jake Cuenca and Joem Bascon.
Apart from its cast members’ social media updates, photos taken during the series’ “look test” pictorial also surfaced online, including one which shows its three lead stars together.
What we know: At its trade event in May introducing its line-up of new shows to advertisers, ABS-CBN highlighted upcoming projects based on Mars Ravelo creations, including the high-flying heroine Darna, the love-lorn mermaid Dyesebel, and the everyman-superhero Captain Barbell.
This was after the Kapamilya network acquired the rights to 13 characters created by the Pinoy comicbook artist in April. Among those who have expressed interest in donning Darna’s two-piece battle gear are Cristine Reyes and Angel Locsin, who previously played the iconic character in a 2005 series.
