THREE THINGS YOU STILL DON’T KNOW ABOUT KRIS LAWRENCE

1. He tried to audition in American Idol

“Actually pumila ako pero sa sobrang dami ng pila sumuko ako. It’s so long, I swear the line is so long. Imagine here to E-Rod, the line like that punong puno ng tao. They’re camping out, doon ka matutulog sa labas naka-sleeping bag ka lang, tapos inisip ko na what if I get sick tapos sipunin ako, mapaos ako, tapos wala rin namang lalabas na boses…I give it up to those guys talaga,” he said.

Kris tried to audition for season 2 in the Pasadena leg of American Idol, the next year when Ruben Studdard won.

2. He is scared of cockroaches and ghosts

“Oh my God I’m scared of cockroaches. Ang pangit nila noh? Also, I’m scared of ghosts. I’m scared of the dark, my mind is the one who play tricks on me, let’s say bababa lang ako para kumuha ng tubig tapos sobrang dilim sa baba, tatakbo ako para lang kumuha ng tubig tapos tatakbo ulit paakyat,” he said.

3. It was his bestfriend Jay-R who convinced him to come home to the Philippines and join a singing contest

“I was so lucky that feeling ko sobrang swerte po ako nung dumating ako nung time na yun. Kasi there’s a lot of Fil-Ams trying to make it here. Ang dami, they came here to sing, they came here to act, but for some reasons they don’t catch their break.”

“Sobrang swerte ako na bestfriend ko si Jay-R kasi nung time na ‘yun. He went home (US) for vacation. Then he told me alam mo ‘yung mga uso ngayon ‘yung mga contests.’ He said ‘i-try mo kaya.’ In a matter of two weeks, I quit all my jobs, sumabay ako sa kanya umuwi dito. After 8 months I got in, the show started (Star in a Million) after 8 months, who would have thought na ako ang mananalo, so that’s when it all started,” he shared.

Kris Lawrence Bags ‘Prince of R&B’ Title, Launches New Album ‘Spread the Love’

There’s no shortage of love in this long-awaited album from Kris Lawrence. On “Spread the Love”, his third album and first since signing with GMA Records, the R&B Prince finds himself exploring the emotive trappings linked with all things love and gives his own interpretation of it-with, more often than not, insistently impressive results.

Kris Lawrence Album

Fans of R&B and pop will find much to appreciate on Kris’ 12-track effort. Leading the soul-fueled record is the imploring mid-tempo single “Sabihin Mo Naman”. Layering keys, synths, and beats, it’s a slow burn ballad that builds to memorable infatuation pleads. Hardly desperate yet effectively sincere at getting his message across.

As much as Kris knows his strengths, he isn’t afraid to let loose and shape his sound. Throughout the record, Kris works alongside the who’s who of the local music scene to craft songs that cater to both avid fans and new listeners.

Opening track “Nightmare”, despite its foreboding title, is the stuff of friendly R&B dreams, carried by shimmering synths and smooth vocals that recall quintessential Usher. Throw in a rap verse from Elmo Magalona in the mix and this fizzy sonic jam about choosing to sleep and dream about the woman she adores than be without her shows promise.

“Rider” follows in the footsteps of its predecessor but instead favors a heavier, war-drums hiphop base where Kris’ smooth vocals and Q-York’s slick verse slide on the punchy beats.

There is plenty of polished R&B jams and power ballads infused in this record too that incorporate Kris’ signature vocal stylings: the spoken-word opening of “Tell Me” sets the sensual “I Wanna Know” ala Joe attitude prodded by its gently strummed guitar and Kris’ beautiful range, hitting those high notes and falsettos easily. While the classic sounding carrier single “Ikaw Pala” may appeal to lovesick fans, it’s the melancholic piano-led “Di Na Matatanggap” that proves to be one of the highlights. “Dito na magwawakas. Ngayo’y alam ko na ang tunay kong nadarama. Pag-ibig ko sa’yo ay wala na,” he laments, singing a classic case of moving on after the fire between them have burned out.

Incidentally, “Ikaw Pala” is the theme song of GMA’s primetime Koreanovela “The Innocent Man” which began airing last July 22.

As the album progresses, more attention-grabbing songs reveal themselves. The Rachelle Ann Go collaboration track “Unbreakable” is a thumping piece of spacey, dance-pop goodness that features K-pop flourishes, a dubstep sample, and club music credibility that Kris definitely possesses. Next is the retro soul, blues styling of “Addict”
that adds dimension to the record’s overall theme.

The album works best when it’s focused on Kris’ versatile, warm vocals as shown on his duet with Bryan Woodart of IV Example on the piano ballad “I’d Rather Be Alone” where his vibrato stands out in the sea of vocal layerings. “Try Again” is one of those self-motivational songs that speak straight to his listeners’ hearts, dropping optimistic advice after advice. “What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger… get up and try again,” he sings reassuringly, drawing perhaps from personal experience prior to fully realizing this album.

“Make Me Whole” with its symphonic production and restrained vocals shifting from clean notes to heartfelt vibratos that sound like it belongs in a movie soundtrack, and the twinkling jam of “Yesterday” end the album on a positive note.

Kris explores themes about love that lurches into the romantic kind then dives into its pitfalls, lacing up tracks with melodies and musicality that project more ambition. He sings with grit and a sense of purpose to connect with people, and on this solid record, he does it more successfully than ever, proving his place right up there with the country’s best.

Kris Aquino May Still Appeal Court Decision on Bimby

Source: www.abs-cbnnews.com

MANILA – The camp of television host Kris Aquino may file an appeal on the denial of the permanent protection order (PPO) against James Yap for their son James “Bimby” Yap Jr.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News on Thursday, Aquino’s lawyer Frank Chavez said they are seeking to get copies of the reports made by the social worker and the child psychologist, which supposedly became the basis of the rejection of the PPO for Bimby.

“Noong Martes, nag-file kami ng motion asking the court to provide us with copies of the reports made by the social worker and the child psychiatrist at ito ay didinigin ng husgado bukas, Biyernes. Depende kung ano ang nakalagay sa reports, then we will gauge our future actions and decisions kung ano ang nakalagay doon,” he said.

If the reports state safeguards for the eventual resumption of Yap’s visitation rights over Bimby, Chavez said then they will respect the court’s decision.

“If the report says that there is basis for us to [appeal the PPO for Bimby], we will do that. We will be remiss in our duty as counsel if we will just let these things pass by. Kapag may sinabi sa report that the visitation of the father will cause more harm than good, then we will call the attention of our client and let her decide,” he said.

While Yap’s lawyer Lorna Kapunan said the denial of the PPO for Bimby means Yap can now see his son, Chavez said he doesn’t see the reunion of father and son happening in the near future.

“It is not going to happen tomorrow, more so on Sunday because they prefer to see him on Sunday. That would be a modification without basis of the visitation rights, which only speak of Wednesdays and Fridays, never Sundays. Sunday is family day and James is out of the family,” he said.

Chavez said they have to know the “safeguards” first, which will be the topic of the hearing this Friday.

According to Chavez, Yap will see Bimby “in the fullness of time” but it should be done the right way. He added it was never Aquino’s intention to keep Bimby away from his father.

“Kapag ini-rollback mo ang time, from the beginning, hindi ipinagdadamot ni Kris ang pagkikita ng ama at anak. Medyo napuno lang siya, nagalit lang siya na ‘yung sa sanctity ng kanyang private room, pati iyon ay sinugod ni Mr. James Yap. Doon na siya nagalit, sobra na iyon. Wala na namang romantic illusion na mangyayari, why force the issue?” he said.

He said the particular incident was witnessed by Bimby and thus, “the issue regarding whether or not he can visit his son is not yet resolved with finality.”

Chavez said Aquino was satisfied that the court granted the PPO she filed for her self because it means the court believed her testimony.

“Nagkaroon ng vindication si Kris dahil hindi ni-reject ng court ang kanyang testimony. Pinaniwalaan siya ng husgado kaya siya nabigyan ng PPO. It is as simple as ABC. I don’t know why some people don’t understand,” he said.
