More than just a filmed concert and tour documentary, this is a chance to get up close and personal with the world’s biggest band. Filmed while the guys were taking their world tour to arenas around the globe — from Mexico to Japan to London’s famed O2 arena — the movie mixes high-energy performance footage, candid interviews, and behind the scenes footage to offer a one-of-a-kind perspective into the talent, hard work and mischief that goes into being One Direction. It’s a remarkable story of humble origins, an unprecedented rise to fame and a fan-driven phenomenon that enabled One Direction to conquer the world.

The film is directed by Academy Award-nominee Morgan Spurlock and produced by Simon Cowell, Adam Milano, Spurlock, and Ben Winston.

In the summer of 2010, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson entered Britain’s biggest talent show “The X Factor,” as talented individual artists. At the boot camp stage of the competition “X Factor” judge Simon Cowell offered the guys the opportunity to stay in the competition as a group.

“I saw five solo artists who were five solo stars, but would be stronger in a group, it was that simple,” says Cowell. “I liked each of them individually, and something made me think they would work really well as a group.”

Calling themselves One Direction, they were immediate sensations. A group of talented and cheeky guys who immediately captured a nation of young girls. They didn’t look or sound pre-packaged, they just exuded talent, friendship and charisma both on and off stage.

Says Cowell, “Right from the get-go, if I’d be honest … I was very much of the attitude, ‘I’m not gonna tell you what to do. You can probably tell me what to do,’ you know? ‘You’ve got to sort it out for yourself, ‘cause I think you’re smart enough.’ And that’s always been the way it’s worked with these boys. I had this just amazing confidence in them.”

Fans responded in their thousands, flooding social media, waiting for hours outside TV studios, and voting the boys through each round of the competition through to the grand final. Though they came in third overall on the show – narrowly missing the record deal awarded the first prize winner – the boys knew instinctively that this was not the last the world would see of One Direction.

That instinct to stay together instantly paid off. The band signed to their “X Factor” mentor Cowell’s record label, Syco Records and quickly got to work recording their debut album whilst performing across the UK and Ireland on the X Factor Live Tour. A book chronicling their experience on the road – Forever Young – went straight to number 1 on The Times Best Seller List. The album, meanwhile, was coming together with a stellar team of writers and producers, from Steve Mac (Westlife, Leona Lewis) to Rami Yacoub (Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys) and Red One (Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez).

The band’s debut album, Up All Night, released in October 2011, was an instant smash; a feat forecast by the fact that their first single, What Makes You Beautiful, had already become the biggest single pre-order in Sony Music’s history. In the United States, the boys sought North American success with a string of appearances and performances that not only turned What Makes You Beautiful into an iTunes hit, but led Up All Night to a feat never before achieved by a British band: entering the Billboard chart at number one with their debut record. With three MTV Video Music Awards, a Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award (for Favorite UK artist), and three MTV Europe Music Awards (including Best New Act and Best UK & Ireland Act), it truly seemed there was no stopping their rise to the top.

The band’s sophomore album, Take Me Home turned 2012 into a banner year for the boys, hitting the top of pre-order charts in 50 countries. The album’s first single, Live While We’re Young, went straight to No. 1. All in all, Take Me Home topped the charts in 37 countries. The Take Me Home tour, which continued into 2013, was a global sellout, taking Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry, and Louis to Europe, North America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.

In July, they released Best Song Ever, a track written specifically for the film. The fun and cheeky video for the song (Directed by Ben Winston) broke records on VEVO with 12.4 million views in one day, making it the most viewed debut video ever on the platform.

Cowell says, “What I’ve loved about working with the boys is that they haven’t taken anything for granted, and they still appreciate and still are in awe of what’s going on. They’ve survived, and they’ll continue to survive because first of all, they’re smart, and secondly they understand their audience and respect their fans. They’ve matured really, really quickly.”

During the tour, though, the notion of a film came together, giving the boys a chance to conquer an entirely different medium.

Lea Michele lands on the cover of Marie Claire Mexico for August 2013 Issue. The interview done before her boyfriend Cory Monteith died from a drug overdose. The editor of this magazine released a statement expressing her sadness for Lea.

Marie Claire Mexico and Latin America Editor-in-Chief Ariadne Grant said:

“Lea Michele arrived early with her beauty team and her agent and was always professional, dedicated and her experience was obvious on the photo shoot but showed another side of her personality, softer and more innocent, on the interview when she got all excited with some questions, she said she loved Mexico so much. That side was even more evident when Cory showed up almost at the end of the session, she was very happy about him being there. Cory showed up in great spirits and was very nice to everybody there; he even took pictures with whoever asked for it. He just asked for a Coke and stayed there watching the shooting until it was done. They were both very nice and obviously happy and in love, we are very disrupted by the unfortunate and untimely events. Our thoughts are with Lea.”

During her interview for the magazine, Lea Michele touched on her relationship with Monteith.

“It’s more interesting having a relationship with someone you work with because we get more attention because we play boyfriend and girlfriend on the show and we are also in real life. But he is the best person I know, he has made my life so incredible and I am so thankful for him and not only to have him as a partner but also as a coworker. It is important to have someone that supports you and encourage you, someone that makes you feel that you are unstoppable, that you can do anything in the world because you have him.”

“After Earth” is on track to become one of Will Smith’s biggest hits locally. “Coming off last year’s blockbuster `Men in Black 3,’ Will Smith is definitely on a roll,” said Cabrera. “The film’s father-and-son theme is also expected to draw in family audiences, and this bodes well for a huge opening weekend.”

The biggest gross on opening day was recorded by Trinoma at P388,872 followed by SM North EDSA at P301,626 and Power Plant with P289,269.

The fourth to tenth place in the rankings are claimed by SM Megamall (P262,989), SM Mall of Asia (P245,070), Glorietta 4 (P242,280), Greenbelt 3 (P214,497), Alabang Town Center (P203,662), Ayala Cebu (P193,716) and Gateway Cineplex (P191,924).

A Dying Earth

Kitai Raige lives on Nova Prime, mankind’s new home. One day, he will be – he must be – a great Ranger, like his father before him.

Cypher Raige, Kitai’s father, is the Prime Commander of the United Ranger Corps and one of the greatest leaders in the history of Nova Prime. He is widely credited with saving the humans of Nova Prime from the planet’s fiercest alien threats: The Skrel and their vicious creations, the Ursa.

Starting in the 21st Century, Earth’s environment became increasingly uninhabitable. Massive seismic activity caused frequent earthquakes of alarming intensity; tectonic plates shifted, creating enormous volcanoes and violent collisions between continents; clean water became scarce and the atmospheric composition changed, resulting in deadly temperature fluctuations and air too toxic for human lungs to breathe.

By 2025 AD, it was clear that mankind would need to leave Earth, if there were any chance of survival. The governments of the world convened and mandated the construction of 10 spaceships, or “arks,” that could sustain human life on a quest to find a new inhabitable planet in another galaxy. The destruction of Earth came faster than any had imagined, however, and only six arks were completed in time for launch. Each ark could house only 125,000 – just .0000625% of the human population – but enough to start a new society. Upon leaving Earth, calendars were changed from AD to AE, reflecting our new life “After Earth.”

Before leaving for good, a message was set up for any future visitors expecting to find suitable resources on the planet – letting them know that they are approaching the most dangerous place in the universe: Earth.

A New Life in Nova Prime

When forced to leave Earth, the last of the human race embarked on a journey through space. After 100 years of travel at speeds faster than light, they arrived at Nova Prime and built a new civilization from the ground up.

In the year 222 AE, humans on Nova Prime formed a tripartite government composed of three branches: The United Ranger Corps, The Primus, and The Savant. Without a balance between these representatives, society would crumble.

The Primus is a philosophical leader who sees the downfall of Earth as proof of the evils of technology and rejects science, advising instead based on the deep, spiritual links that bind all on Nova Prime. The Savant, on the other hand, leads through the promotion of scientific discovery, believing that technology and human achievement are the keys to humanity’s survival.

The United Ranger Corps was formed with a single mission: Preserve Humanity. In the last days of humanity’s eviction from Earth, the governments of every nation selected 1,000 of their best and brightest—tacticians, pilots, soldiers and the like—to form a first-response team capable of keeping order through the growing number of natural disasters and international catastrophes. The U.N.-sanctioned group was titled The United Ranger Corps, or “Rangers” for short. The Rangers quickly became the new standard for military service, saving countless lives in the process.

Aspiring Rangers like Kitai must undergo intense training to prove themselves both physically and mentally. For Kitai, becoming a Ranger would prove his worth—not only to himself, but to his father.

The cutlass is a Ranger’s greatest weapon; an extension of the strength that comes from within. Lightweight and handheld, the cutlass is both versatile and elegant, and blends seamlessly into a Ranger’s lifesuit, making it essential for attack, self-defense and survival conditions. Every Ranger memorizes the series of quick finger inputs necessary to activate the hundreds of smart fibers that form numerous weapon configurations from both ends of the handle. The C-40 combat model has a total of 22 configurations, including short blade, spear, long blade, sickle, dagger and more.

The Threats

Our peaceful existence was a brief one. Now, threats loom over us, every single day of our lives.

Just 143 years after landing on Nova Prime (in 243 AE), humanity weathered an attack from The Skrel: an alien species that had long considered Nova Prime their holy ground. To them, humans are vermin infesting their sacred land. We endured this first onslaught; we won—but this was only the beginning.

The Skrel had underestimated mankind in their early attacks. But, through the centuries, the enemy’s weapons became more advanced. In the war of 576AE, they finally released their ultimate weapon: The Ursa. A nightmare of a creature—bred for warfare, and genetically engineered for one reason: to hunt and kill humans. Ursa prey on the pheromones humans secrete when they’re scared. They can sense humans’ fear. Many thought the Ursa unbeatable and awaited mankind’s inevitable demise—but a solution arose, and brought them hope.

Just as it seemed nothing could stop the Ursa, Cypher Raige inadvertently uncovered their weakness: without fear, humans are invisible to the Ursa. In an unprecedented show of self-control and discipline, Raige eliminated his fear and defeated the Ursa. This act of restraint became known as “Ghosting,” and lifted Raige to new heights of fame. There are only seven Ghosts in existence. They are anomalies.
